She laughed at the cryptic text, then instead of sending a return text, she found Scott’s number. He answered on the first ring.

“Is the response so complicated that you had to call me?”

She could hear the smile behind his words, and it soothed her aching heart. “No, but I need some background. Who’s this newborn?”

“My best friend’s son.”

“Really?” Brianna smiled as she imagined his handsome face. “That’s the guy you mentioned is your business partner too?”

“Yes. The baby was born Wednesday night.”

“How exciting. Their first?”

“Yes. They named him Cody Patrick Young.”

“That’s a nice name.” She drew invisible circles on the thigh of her worn jeans with her finger.

“Brad and Kristi are excited. But you haven’t answered my question. What’s a good gift?”

“Well, I haven’t had a baby myself, but I assume the parents would appreciate newborn-sized diapers and baby wipes. Lots of diapers and wipes, actually.”

“Perfect. I’ll have a case of each shipped to their house.”

“I’m sure they’ll be grateful.” She wanted to keep the conversation going. Hearing Scott’s voice was just what her soul craved. “Any other news from Charlotte?” She leaned her head back on the chair. Oh, how she’d missed him.

“It’s been a typical Friday with meetings, phone calls, and boring things like that. How about in Splendid Lake?”

“The good news is my mom had a good day.”

“Is that right? Tell me more.” His tone was so warm.

“That’s fantastic,” he said when she’d finished. “You said that was the good news, though. What’s your bad news?”

She frowned. “Well, when Taylor didn’t show up to help me finish the roofing, I watched a video on YouTube. But then I hammered my thumb on the first try.”

“Ouch.”

“You can say that again.” She examined her hand. “It’s still red.”

“You know, I can finish the job for you.”

“I appreciate the offer, but I still think it’s better if you don’t come.”

He sighed. “That’s the nicest rejection I’ve ever had from a beautiful woman.”

She laughed as her cheeks heated, then quickly decided to change the subject. “You haven’t told me all that much about your life in Charlotte. Did you grow up there?”

“Yes and no. I was born in Gastonia and moved here when I was a toddler.” He paused for a moment. “I lived in Mecklenburg County after that.”

Her mind whirled with questions. Why was he so tightlipped about his childhood? “You once told me you never met your father. Does your mother live close by?”

“She died a long time ago.” His tone was somber now.

“Oh, Scott. I’m sorry. And then you were out on your own at eighteen?”

“That’s right.”

“You told me you went into construction then. You didn’t want to go to college?”

“That wasn’t an option. What about you? Didn’t you even consider following Taylor to Wilmington?”

She picked at a loose sliver of wood on the arm of the chair. “I already knew what I wanted to do, and I didn’t need a degree to do it. From the time I was little I’d follow my dad to the workshop and hand him tools while he worked on boat engines.
